The purposes of this quasi-experimental research wereto study and compare knowledge and attitude toward nursingcare of mentally ill patients of nursing students before andafter using case studies in teaching psychiatric mentalhealth nursing, and to compare such knowledge and attitudeof nursing students who received teaching by case studiesand those who recieved regular teaching method. Researchsample consisted of 34 nursing students of BoromratchonneeBangkok nursing college who were practicing in PsychiatricMental Health Nursing m at Srithunya Hospital. Thesesubjects were equally, and randomly assinged into onecontrol group and one experimental group by matched pairtechnique. The experimental group received teaching usingcase studies for 4 week,whilethe control group receivedregular teaching method. Three research instruments whichwere developed by the researcher and tested for the contentvalidity, were one teaching plan using case studies, a setof four case studies presented in the video tape format, andone knowledge test . In addition two attitude tests whichwere attitude toward psychiatric patients and toward nursingcare of mentally ill patients were used. The reliability ofthe knowledge and two attitude tests were .80, .81, and .82,respectively. Major findings were as followed: 1. The knowledge and attitude toward psychiatricpatients and toward nursing care of mentally ill patients ofnursing students after learning by case studies weresignificantly higher than before learning, at the .05 level. 2. The knowledge and attitude toward psychiatricpatients and toward nursing care of mentally ill patients ofnursing students in the experimental group weresignificantly higher than those in the control group, at the.05 level. |
