Computer programs for calculating the heat transfer in continuouscasting for various metals with different ingot shapes were developed basedon finite difference method. Three types of algorithms were constructed;two for the continuous casting process for steels and one for generic. Lowthermal conductivity of steels and relatively rapid casting rate allow, inthe case of steady state, exclusion of the conduction term in the pullingdirection. For slab and billet, this can reduce the problem to one andtwo-dimensional transient heat transfer, respectively. The third one isgeneric for non-ferrous metals and for the initial stage for steel. Thenvalidation for programs was performed by comparing to other literatureswhich had been confirmed by experiments. Agreement between results from theprogram and actual measurement was well. After that the programs were usedto calculate solidification progress in the process. By checking thesensibility of operating parameters it was shown that the most sensitiveparameters were casting speed and secondary cooling. |
