This study aims to investigate the effect of using a Mutual Dictation (MD) technique as a teaching teachnique in reading, and the students attitudes towards the implementation of it. The experiment was carried out with 8 low achieving readers (who obtained the lowest marks in their placement reading test) of Mattayomsuksa Three (a class of 46 students) at Islamic College of Thailand in Bangkok. Three Mutual Dictation Exercises (MDE) were used in this study as three main lessons to investigate the subjects reading comprehension and their attutudes. Each MDE consists of a reading passage of about 180 words and 6 items of a true/false (T/F) exercise. Each subject had to dictate and take down from each other in pairs mutually. Then, they corrected each others texts and did the 6 items of the T/F exercise. The subjects scores from the T/F exercises were recorded in the teachers and the students score-profiles. The other instruments, i.e. students questionnaires, students interviews and the teachers diary were used after each MOE to collect additional data. The 3 T/F exercises were summed and calculated for their arithmetic mean (X) and then compared with the scores of the placement test using a T-test formula to find out whether the MD technique helped the students to integrate the use of 4 skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) for their reading comprehension. The result of the study reveals that the Mutual Dictation technique can help the students to integrate the use of the 4 skills for their reading comprehension. There is a significant difference between the mean of the placemtn test and that of the 3 T/F execises, at the 0.5 level. The responses from the questionnaires and the students interviews show that the subjects have positive attitudes towards the implementation of the MD technique. They also enjoyed doing the MDE and gained some benefits for their reading comprehension. |
