This thesis, Plae-Kao: From Novel into Film, is acase study to see just how a novel, Plae-Kao, isadopted for the screen. This study will also theevolution of the relationship of the Thai modern noveland film as well as adapting the Thai novel by otherart forms and media By examining the history of the Thai modern noveland film, the researcher found the Thai modern noveland film began to develop an ever closer relationshipsince the founding of the Thai film industry, afterwhich they seem to evolve together as composers, scriptwriters, derectors and producers selected more and morenovels upon which to base their films. Plae-Kao was the second Thai novel to be adaptedto film in 1940 after which it was also used as theinspiration for movies, teleevision dramas and music.The three film versions, 1940, 1954 and 1977, allpresent slightly different adaptations, depending onthe period it was produced, as well as the writers'directors' and actors' interpretations. This isparticularly evident in the death of Riem. After examining all documents and conductingintense research, this researcher believes the bestfilm adaptation of Plae-Kao was by Cherd Soongsri. Fora film to succeed,it must be both artistic andcommercial. It must be able to convey Thai culture toforeign audiences, and this researcher believes CherdSoongsri's Plae-Kao does this best while it alsoreflects his own emotions just as a novel should forits readers. |
