Two menstrual regulatory and haematinic traditional preparations, interacted with nitrite in an acidic circumstance (pH 3-3.5) at 37(+,ฐ)Cfor 4 h, showed their mutagenicity towards ~iSalmonella lyphimurium~i TA98and TA100 of Ames test without activating system. Attempt to show thatherbal drinks prepared from six herbs, namely ~iHibiscus sabdariffa~iLinn., ~iChrysanthemum morifolium~i Hemsl., ~iCarthamus tinctorius~i Linn.,~iMorus alba~i Linn., ~iAegle marmelos~i (Linn.) Corr., and ~iCentellaasiatica~i (Linn.) Urban could inhibit the mutagenicity of the nitritetreated drug was performed. It was found that the herbal drinks did not inhibit the mutagenicityof nitrite treated drugs. Moreover, four of six herbal drinks prepared from~iChrysanthemum morifolium~i Hemsl., ~iCarthamus tinctorius~i Linn.,~iAegle marmelos~i (Linn.) Corr, and ~iCentella asiatica~i (Linn.) Urbanenhanced the mutagenicity of the treated drugs. Higher mutagenicityenhancing effect of the herbal drinks were found on nitrite treated drugnumber 2 than on drug number 1 and it was more prominent on ~iSalmonellatyphimurium~i TA98 than on TA100. A possible hypothesis to explain why thenumber of revenants of both strains induced by nitrite treated drugs wasincreased may be due to some reductants in the herbal drinks. Furthermore, the enzyme inducing of herbs, namely, nitroreductase and~iO~i-acetyltransferase in ~iSalmonella typhimurium~i of Ames test that arebelieved to play a role in mutagenesis of positive standard should beinvestigated. The results presented here suggested that daily consumption of herbaldrinks could not reduce the risk of the stomach cancer from nitrite treatedthese drugs. Thus, avoiding consumption of nitrite containing foods shouldbe better way to prevent gastric cancer. |
