This thesis was a study on social sciences. The researcher used a qualitative research to study Koh Yao Noi Traditional Fishermen Association at Koh Yao District Phang-nga Province. The sample groups of the study were members of Koh Yao Noi Traditional Fishermen Association, private development officers, local government officials, and general people. This study was conducted to study about 1)Historical, economic, social, and cultural background of the community of Koh Yao Noi fishermen. 2) Historical background and the initiation of the association. 3) Structure and function of the association. 4) Problems, obstacles and solutions of the association. 5) The potential of self-reliance of the community. The result of the study can be summarized as follows 1) The community of Koh Yao Noi was founded in about 1785 by Thai Muslim had immigrated from Trang province. 2) The formation of the Koh Yao Noi traditional fishermen association was caused by the degradation of coastal resources in Phang-nga Bay. Moreover, the support and assistance of Non Governmental Organizations. These NGOs not only assist the traditional fishermen form the association but also the activities of the association. 3) The association consists of consulting committee and working committee elected from reliable and working to make suggestions on members. The association is also responsible for : petrol fund, net fund, shrimp a day fund, conservative activities, campaigning activities and so on. 4) Some of the problems the association deal with include the efficiency of the leaders, the expansion of the power base of the association and the conflict between government and fishermen in the community. 5) The association can help itself by using the social capital, which are local wisdom, community organization and networks, local culture, indigenous wise man, social institute and local technology. However, natural resource capital is absence and this is an important problems in the community. Therefore, it is indispensable for the association to take care and protect their coastal resources in order to self-reliance and sustainable development in Koh Yao Noi community. |
