A crossectional study of sexual behavior and related factors among 426 students of Mathayomsuksa 4-6 in Phuket Province was conducted between November and December 2000 by using questionnaires. Data analysis was done by descriptive and analytical statistics. Results revealed that number of female students is a little bit higher than male. Their knowledge on sexual aspects was in a moderate level and half of them had positive attitudes toward sex. About 80% still stayed with their parents and 54.5% claimed to have a good relationship with their families. 63.8% formed their sex roles from their families. About one third had visited entertainment houses and a similar amount had watched pornographic materials and had drunk alcoholic beverages. Forty seven percent of students had experiences of inappropriate sexual behavior such as being alone with a date (40.8%), hand holding (35.0%), kissing and petting (18.1%) and intimate sexual affairs (12.7%). Male students showed more proportion of sexual affairs to female students (4.8:1). The study revealed that progressive steps of sexual behavior of those who had gone out together, hand holding, kissing and petting finally had sexual affairs as much as 46.2% for males and 14.9% for females. A majority of respondents (75%) had sexual intercourse with their boyfriend or girlfriend and the average age of the first episode was 15 years. The chi-square test was performed to assess the association the results revealed that gender, allowance, attitude toward sex, perception of sex role from family, risky behavior of peer, visiting entertainment houses, media exposure, drinking alcoholic beverages and cigarette smoking had statistically significance with sexual behavior (p<.05). The results of Logistic Regression Analysis could predict sexual behavior of students by attitudes toward sex, entertainment houses, media exposure and cigarette smoking. The results showed a real situation of sexual behavior among students and the environment, so pornographic material and entertainment houses should be properly managed. The empowerment of life skill and a positive attitude toward sex should be encouraged by family, school and students themselves for a suitable behavior outcome. |
