The database and retrieval system of fisheries research works on the Internet had been developed with the purpose to disseminate technical knowledge and promote the Department of Fisheries to interested individuals. Hence the Department of Fisheries research works were collected and stored into the database, which is built by using SQL Server 7.0 as DBMS. MS. Visual Basic 6.0 was used to build forms in order to facilitate additions and updates to fisheries research work data. The Internet is used as a tool to service and disseminate the fisheries research work data, by building hypertext documents using HTML and ASP to connect with the database. And SQL language is used to build retrieval techniques such as Key word searching, Subject searching, and Image searching. These three techniques of research work retrieval on the Internet were tested with users, and it was found that the Key word searching technique is easy, convenient and- fast to use, and it can also covers all fisheries topics. Subject searching technique was found to be easy, convenient, and fast to use. It can also covers all fisheries topics, and can interact with users reasonably well. For Image searching technique, it is easy to use, can interact best with users, but it covers only fisheries topics concerned with aquatic animals. After the user successfully retrieves the wanted research work, he may look at its abstract, bibliographical data, and read full-text document by using Acrobat program via this retrieval system for fisheries research works web site. |
