There has been a limited use of Thai Traditional Medicine (TTM), in Suphanburi province. This descriptive research is aimed to studying practice, resource management factors and satisfaction regarding TTM. Data were collected from 56 health officers who had been responding to TTM questionnaires and interviews in health centers in January 2001. Results revealed that there was a low performance level in services such as herbal medicine use, herbal steambath, traditional massage and herbal hot compress which were 28.6%, 1.8%, 5.4% and 3.6%, respectively. Health volunteers received TTM training at a rate of about 80.4%. For information and public relations concerning TTM, folders, posters, flip charts and exhibits were published (35.7 concerning knowledge about TTM and 78.6% concerning medicinal plants). The majority of health centers did not perform the available services because of insufficient personnel, lack of skills, materials and budget support etc. As for management resources factors, it was found that the insufficient health officers were about 78.6%, and 80.4% had no budget support. In material support, most of them had no herbal medicine available and lacked, steambath pots and the handheld spinning wheel for health analysis which were 71.4%, 66.1% and 57.1%, respectively. Job satisfaction in TTM was at a medium level about 91.1% of health centers. This research suggests that the administrators should support and promote TTM information and public relations to foster health center services in all four areas and increase production of herbal medicine products and long life storage techniques in order to increase utilization of TTM and income of health centers, which are the motivations for health officers who perform TTM services. |
