The underlying purpose of this research is to identify the impacts of the long boat traditional program on the local environmental culture. Particular attention is given to the issues associated with the case study of the two local communities in Bangplama District, Suphanburi Province, namely Suanhong-Bangplama and Kaohong-Lanka. A qualitative approach has been used in the study. In-depth interviews were conducted with key informants in the areas in addition to a comprehensive documentary review. The study of "The impacts of long boat traditional program on the local environmental culture, case study: Suanhong-Bangplama and Kaohong-Lanka communities in Bangplama District, Suphanburi Province" examines the impacts on five aspects of local environmental culture including: 1) living culture; particularly on folklore, social recreation, social beliefs and local technological wisdom, 2) language; on literature, 3) religion and ethics; on religious personnel, 4) aesthetics and arts; .on art creation and design, musical and performing arts, Thai traditional sport, and 5) social economics and politics; on social institutions, local economy and tourism services. The findings are presented in a descriptive format. Recommendations from the study; 1) further systematic gathering of local technological wisdom including spiritual beliefs should be undertaken for future reference and usage, 2) public awareness of the programs core leisure and social objectives should be integrated into the program to prevent potential immoral casualties from gambling, 3) there should be a continuation of the long boat program in the region to promote more tourism, and 4) there should be good planning, implementation and control of the program to ensure its sustainability in the long run. |
