The objective of this research project is to study about religion and peace in three major respects. First is to investigate the principles of teaching and practices or approaches to the concept of peace in Brahmanism - Hinduism and Theravada Buddhism. Second is to study the religious methods for peace and thirdly is to review the approaches or strategies to peace as practically implemented by Mahatama Gandhiji. With regard to this research, it was found that the two old religions considered the teachings and methods or approaches to peace as the main goals and methods of practice. In the theory, Brahmanism - Hinduism consideres theistically Brahman or Paramatman as the goal of peace whereas Theravada Buddhism regards atheistically Nibbana or Nirodha as the supreme state of perfection or bliss that is the absolute extinction of suffering. Then the religious methods or approaches to peace are classified into three degrees of practice namely the ordinary, middle and high leading to the goal, the supreme liberation of Brahman but in Buddhism it is Nibbana - the extinction of suffering or absolute peace. The special investigation concentrated on the concrete example or test given and attained by Mahatama Gandhiji : that is the Satyagraha and Ahimsadharma as the strategies to individual and social peace. In addition, the researcher has also proposed the idea on the proper consideration to study the real religious goals and practices for peace with firm faith and trust in their doctrines. So, the more examples of the goals in this life that can be seen, the more obstacles against such goals can be overcome and the goals attained. |
