This research is an ethical study of the traditional medicine practitioners both in terms of their behaviors, treatment, and their attitudes towards their ethical rules in the future. The subjects were twenty registered traditional medicine practitioners at the Ministry of Public Health, Chumpolburi District, Surin Province. Moreover, 100 patients who were treated at the traditional practitioners houses were observed. The research was conducted by means of an in-depth interview and a patient participation. Findings reveal that every traditional medicine practitioner is a Buddhist. Most of them are male except for midwives who are female. Seventy-five percent of practitioners are older than 60 years old. These people have been in the profession more than twenty years (25.0%) Eighty-five percent of them received their knowledge of traditional healing from their teachers who were also traditional medicine practitioners (85.0%). Fifteen percent were trained at the traditional medical school. All of them strictly observe the Five Precepts and the Eight Precepts only on the Buddhist Day. According to their vows with the teachers, they do not consume food or drinks which are strictly forbidden. The ceremony to pay respect for the teachers is performed annually. From the research, every traditional medicine practitioners is a good Buddhist with kindness and compassion especially in healing their patients. The principles of Brahmavihars, Sanghavatthu, and Iddhipada are strictly observed by traditional medicine practitioners. Finally their code of ethics is becoming less strict. |
