The present study aims at analyzing the structure of Tinawat Marukapitak's talkshows as well as examining linguistic devices Tinawat uses to invoke humor. The dataincludes six shows of Tinawat. Each show is about 2-3 hours. It is found that the six shows consist of 4-7 elements. The seven elements areopening, salutation, aperture, body, conclusion, tribute and terminus. The elementsare arranged in the same order in every show. Among the seven elements, body appears to be the longest element. It can bedivided into sections and sections consist of subsections. The theme most frequentlyfound in the body of every talk is the first pronoun /phom/. Other themes foundthroughout the body are pronouns /khaw/, /than/ or /thanthanlaay/ or/thanphuumiikiat/ as well as themes which are related to the main topic of the talk. These themes help bind the discourse together as well as support the main topic. It appears that Tinawat adopts ten linguistic devices to invoke humor -- usingsexual words, using words in wrong contexts, using acronym and abbreviated words, using new words formed by analogy, using puns, using idioms, using meaning-play,using metaphor, using verbal irony and using alphabet-play. The devices mostpreferred by Tinawat are using sexual words, meaning-play and verbal irony. The study shows that Tinawat's shows are distinguished because they are verywell organized. His audience has no trouble following his long talks. Besides, the 10devices he adopts skillfully to invoke humor help make the talks which containserious topics more entertaining. His technique of using sexual words make his jokeshumorous but not rude. His sarcastic irony which is surfacely less aggressive than aninsult is adopted to criticize a target as well as to invoke humor among hisaudience. |
