This study provides an overview of So grammar, including the discourse features of narrative, procedural, and hortatory texts. So is an Austroasiatic (Katuic, Mon-Khmer) language located in northeast Thailand, though the main body of So speakers is found in the central provinces of Laos. The data for this study is gathered mainly from Kusuman District, Sakon Nakhon Province of northeast Thailand. The first chapter provides a general introduction to this study, covering the background of the So people, previous studies in the Katuic languages, and general sociolinguistic information about the So and related people groups of northeast Thailand. The second chapter reviews the phonological system of the So language including word formation, syllable patterns, and segments. The third chapter covers So syntax summarizing the morphology, grammatical categories, and constituent order. The fourth chapter analyzes several features of So discourse in three different genres; narrative, procedural, and hortatory. The fifth chapter is the conclusion which reviews the significance of this research. |
