The purposes of this study were multifold. The first purpose was to study the contents of the metaphors found in Chaophraya Phrakhlang's version of Samkok, applying John Searle's principles of interpretation. One hundred sixty-five selected metaphor samples were analyzed for their meanings, using qualitative description. The second purpose was to study Searle's components of metaphor creation, the principles by means of which metaphors are created, to see whether the metaphors under this study fit his theory. The third purpose was to identify the environment, cultures, beliefs and attitudes of the Chinese people as reflected in the metaphors. The outcomes of study are two-folded. First, it is not possible to apply literal interpretation in analyzing the meanings of the metaphors. Since this will not reveal the true meanings of the intended messages. Therefore, in interpreting the messages, it is necessary to rely on the contexts in which the metaphors areutilized, the world experiences that native speakers or speaker-listeners, writer-readers share, as well as the backgrounds of the receivers of the messages. It has been found, moreover, that the metaphors in this study can be put into two categories: those created based on Searle's concept and those not based on Searle's concept. |
