The objectives of this research are to compare and analyze the method of the walking bass line and solo improvisation on the double bass of Charles Mingus, Ray Brown, and Eddie Gomez. The bass lines from the works of Charles Mingus, Ray Brown, and Eddie Gomez were transcribed and compared using western music theory. The results of this research showed that all three bassists employ different techniques on their walking bass line and improvisation on the bass, as follows: Walking bass: 1. Charles Mingus liked to walk his bass chromatically around the circle of fifth. 2. Ray Brown emphasized his walking bass around the harmonic tonal structure. 3. Eddie Gomez, on the contrary, put his emphasis on building the melodic line around the tone center. Solo improvisation (on a solo section): 1. Charles Mingus liked to do his improvisation in a chromatic motion by emphasizing the chord tone. 2. Ray Brown emphasized tonal structure along his melodic lines. 3. Eddie Gomez based his improvisation on creating melodic lines. It is suggested that further analysis be conducted on the musical techniques of jazz bassists and that this information be disseminated in the Thai language. |
