The purpose of this thesis is to compare lexical usage in Laplae dialect, Uttaradit province, including the tendencies of lexical usage among three different age groups. The researcher used 410 words divided into 12 groups for interviewing the Laplae speakers. Data was collected from 24 informants; 12 males and 12 females. They were divided into three different age groups : the first generation age group (55 years or up), the second generation age group (35 - 45 years) and the third generation age group 5 - 25 years). The results show that the three age groups of Laplae have 4 kinds of lexical usage : (1) The Laplae lexical items, which are the same words as base words and other, are used by all age groups (246 words or 60%) (2) The Laplae lexical items, which are the same words and base words, are used by all age groups, but some age groups used other base words (25 words or 6.09%) (3) The Laplae lexical items, which are the same words as base words and others used by adjacent generations (18 words or 4.39%) (4) All age groups have taken words from other dialects and use them interchangeably with or to replace the base words (121 words or 29.51%). Phonological variations appearing in unconditioned rules are found in this study. Semantic change is also found mainly in the third generation and a number of words are becoming lost in daily use. The study also indicates that the third generation of Laplae dialect speakers demonstrate the most lexical change and show a tendency of using a narrow domain of usage for the Laplae vocabularies and more Thai loan words. |
