This thesis is a comparative study of two Thai translations of Jean Webster's "Daddy-Long-Legs" by Sungworn Krairuek and by Kaewkumthip Chai. The objectives of the study are to analyzeand to compare the two styles of translation as well as the translators' techniques. Theresults of the study are as follows: In terms of stylistic comparison, both tried to adjust the original paragraph structurein order to make it clearer for the Thai reader. The adjustment included insertion ofadditional explanations in parentheses and the use of punctuation marks used in the Thaiwriting system only. Moreover, Kaewkumthip used footnotes. As for vocabulary and idiomaticexpressions, both translators used transliteration, direct translation, free translation andliteral translation. At the sentence level, both translators used modification of the passivevoice and modification of the negative form using syntactic variations to achieve specificmeanings. With regards to translation techniques, both translators used omission of details, shortened sentences and rearranged word order. Moreover, Sungworn frequently used additionaldetails in her version. According to the survey of readers' satisfaction, the researcher found that the readersprefer the version of Kaewkumthip Chai to that of Sungworn Krairuek with the ratio of 62%: 38% |
