This thesis is a phonological comparison of four Tai Yuan dialects in central Thailand. It describes consonant phonemes, vowel phonemes, tones and syllables used in BanDontawit, Tambon Sasimum, Amphoe Kamphaengsaen, Nakhonpathom province. The interview method was used for eliciting data. The informants were asked how they use a number of basic words in their dialects. Based on the minimal pair method and Gedneys tone box, the consonants, vowels and tones were analyzed. The phonological system of Tai Yuan collected in Nakhonpathom province was then compared with the results of previous phonological studies of Tai Yuan as spoken in Ratchaburi, Sarabuli and Lopburi provinces to see similarities and differences in the dialects. The study shows that Tai Yuan at Amphoe Kamphaengsaen, Nakhonpathom province has 20 consonant phonemes,21 vowel phonomes and 6 tones. The comparative study of Tai Yuan spoken in four different provinces reveals that consonants and vowels of all dialects, except for / (...) / found in Lopburi, are similar and the phonetic features of tones in all four provinces are not appreciably different. |
