"Comparison of Results of Exposure to Fear and Sympathy Appeals Spotson AIDS" is an experimental research study following the posttest-onlycontrol group design. Its sample consisted of 270 high-school male andfemale students studying in Bangkok. The students were divided into 3groups, each of which was composed of 90 students. The first group was thecontrol group that did not watch any spots. The second group was exposed tothe fear-appeal spots on AIDS whereas the third group was exposed to thesympathy-appeal spots on AIDS. The objectives of the study were as follows: 1. To compare the effectiveness of the fear-appeal and thesympathy-appeal spots on AIDS with respect to knowledge about AIDS. 2. To compare the effectiveness of the fear-appeal and thesympathy-appeal spots on AIDS with respect to attitude towards AIDS. 3. To compare the effectiveness of the fear-appeal and thesympathy-appeal spots on AIDS with respect to behavioral intention aboutAIDS. 4. To survey the high-school students' opinion about the fear-appealand the sympathy-appeal spots on AIDS. The study found that there were no significantly statisticaldifferences in knowledge, attitude, and behavioral intention betweenstudents who were exposed and who were not exposed to the spots.Furthermore, the students exposed to the fear-appeal spots were notsignificantly different from the students exposed to the sympathy-appealspots in terms of knowledge, attitude, and behavioral intention. Regarding opinion towards the spots on AIDS, most of the studentsliked the spots and thought that the best way to create the spots on AIDSwas to have AIDS patients as the presenters. However, the students thoughtthat the contents of the spots were old-fashioned and repetitious. |
