This thesis, The Musical Characteristics of Mr. Prasit Payomyong, is objectively aimed to study and analyze the life and musical works of Mr. Prasit Payomyong. The research methodology applied in this thesis was a qualitative approach on Ethnomusicological concepts. Data were collected through individual interviews, printed matter and have been analyzed along with socio-revolutional theory and western music theory. The processed information was presented in a descriptive study approach. He has worked as a night club musician and was a founder of the Bangkok Swing band. After that, he became a harmonic composer of several official and private music bands; then, a lecturer to a large number of youths, teachers and musicians. From music characteristic analysis, his works in 1954-1973, like Duan-ei (1954), Bann-rao (1960), Rak-ter-sa-mer (1963), Kon-deyo-nai-duang-jai (1965), Nee-rak (1966) and Ta-lae-chee-wit (1973) reflected different stages of development in that period there were 3 phases. (1) studying period, 1936-1958, (2) public service period, 1959-1968 and (3) privately employed period, 1969-present. Among his works, 6 of them showed unique musical style by mixing the two musical cultures of Thai classical pentatonic together with western half-tone harmonic arrangements. The result of this study indicated that Mr. Prasit Payomyong, was one of the pioneers who established harmonic composition teaching and became an expert counseller to Siam Kolkarn Music School, until now. In his musical works, he joined Mr. Udom Sattakowit and Mrs. Sherry Savettanan to compose music which were awarded royal prizes. He was certified to be a National Artist of Performing Art in 1989. |
