The Lao Song at Kaoyoi District, Petchaburi Province is an ethnic group in Thailand which has many interesting traditions. The objective of this research is to study the Lao Song entertainment tradition called Ingon. The Lao Songs history, way of life, culture and traditions as they relate to Ingon are examined The characteristics of Ingon, including music, songs and dances, are also studied Special attention is paid to the role of Ingon in Lao Song society. Finally, cultural changes and their influence on the preservation of Ingon are considered. Qualitative methods were used to conduct this research Field study conducted between October 1996 and April 1997 and documentary research were used to collect data. The research shows that the Lao Song immigrated to Thailand over two hundred years ago. Though some traditions have changed or lapsed the Lao Song still have a unique culture. Ingon consists of Tod-Ma-Gon (the style of playing), singing, dancing and making the music. These have developed in response to the unique social needs and conditions of the Lao Song. Changing social factors seem to have an effect on Ingon. Factors such as family training, economy and communications technology will problaly change Lao Song society and, with it, Ingon. Support from the government and private sector in creating a local development plan may allow the Lao Song way of life and the Ingon to be preserved. |
