This research examines the traditional marriage with the trees Goddess in Singhanakhon District, Songkhla Province. The study is based on the form, belief, meaning and symbol of the tradition, including the relationship between the people who performed the rite. This study used a qualitative approach. It was found that this tradition follows the same performance as a general marriage. Howevers, there are as to purpose and meaning. The most important thing is to respect the ancestors, which leads to spirit worship of the ancestors. The tradition demonstrated the need of moral support that involves symbols of the primitive religion. The dominant symbol of the rite is the "Thuat", which is the spirit of the performers ancestors. This is a significant foundation to define the role of the relationship between next generations and the ancestors (Mae Thuat Muang Thong). A dominant symbol was used in the rite to respond to social and religious change. This rite will be a good way to reduce the religious conflict between the Buddhism and Islam of the peasants. The social and religious change is a significant factor in performing the rite, which demonstrates social need. Therefore, the traditional marriage with the trees Goddess is for both social reasons and spiritual reasons. This tradition is inclined to adjust itself the methods, meaning and purpose. |
