The purpose of this thesis is to study Confucius'sphilosophy of History which also serves as a basic concept of hissocial philosophy. Confucius believes in the continuity andrepetition of history which depend on the transmission of atradition, joining the past, present and future. History, astruth and moral standard, indicates the prosperity and decline ofa civilization. For Confucius, the cultivation of Li (rites, rituals, rules of propriety) is a necessary condition forconstant revitalization of past ideals embedded in the history ofthe Chou. Han Fei Tzu,, on the other hand, argues that historychanges continuously and never repeats itself. He, therefore, seeks and finds answer for truth and social order in theimplementation of law rather that in the transmission of atradition. He uses rewards and punishments, not the cultivationof Li, as means to establish social order. Confucius's Philosophy of History is highly significant forit emphasizes the continuity of a civilization as a garuntee forsocial order, although at times of crisis, law is also needed. |
