This research aims to study how Nonnoi villagers who live near the forestresources in Boondarik District, Ubonratchathanee Province, use herbs for treating their illnesses and for other uses and the sustainability of this use. This study wasconducted though discussions and observations with community leaders, traditional healers, and households. Nonnoi village use herbs for treating their traditional illnesses (illnesses by the villagers' traditional beliefs, illnesses which were unsuccessful treated by modern medicine) illnesses occurring from the supernatural, illnesses caused by changes within the body, illnesses caused by daily life, illnesses caused by abnormality, and illnesses caused by infectious diseases. The villagers use herbs for their minor illnesses while they visit traditional healers for serious illnesses. Furthermore, the villagers boil herbs and drink the liquid to provide strength or recover health, but utilization for disease protection was not found. Villagers also use herbs for food, agriculture, beauty, commodities, and rituals. The forest reserve where the villagers pick most of their herbs is aplace of great spiritual and community significance. However, collecting herbs has decreased due to the deterioration of the forest as well as the reach of modern medical and industrial products which can be used instead of herbs. Herbs are still sustainable for the villagers's use depending on the method of conservation, the beliefs regarding the forest, the beliefs and method of herb collection, propagation, and the transference of herbal knowledge, but the villagers' methods of utilizing and sustaining herbs has focussed on more commercial lines which cannot be sustained by conservation. Thus, this research recommends that the villagers be encouraged to participate and manage herbs and forest resources seriously, with local wisdom used in of conservation practices. |
