The purpose of this research was to study the participation process in cultural heritage conservation within Rajabhat Institute Phranakhon Si Ayutthaya premises, using Participatory Action Research (PAR). The population included two groups: 1) interested staff members and students at Rajabhat Institute Phranakhon Si Ayutthaya; 2) involved authorities and sectors in conserving cultural heritage. The areas were chosen by purposive sampling. The qualitative data were collected from documents, surveys, focus-group discussions, in-depth interviews and the A-I-C (Appreciation-Influence-Control) process. Content analysis and induction analysis were used to analyze the data. The findings were as follows: In the pre-operation stage, no definite activities concerning cultural heritage conservation were found. During the operation stage, it was found that all individuals involved in this study learned every step in finding solutions, and they co-operatively put the solutions into practice. In the post-operation stage, there were activities involving cultural heritage conservation in the Institute from collaboration between involved people and staff in the institute. More importantly, every involved participant in this study was aware of the benefits of the conservation, which are affective and spiritual, and not related to their personal gains. As for research implications, the findings should be extensively put into practice in all cultural heritage sites in Thailand. For policy makers, sectors involved ought to promote the participatory problem-solving process. The future research should focus on developing local school and university curriculum to integrate cultural heritage conservation into environmental education. |
