The research objectives are to study the structure components and trends of Samut Sakhon city relating to the alternatives of rail transit lines and their impacts on the city's development comparing between the alternative alignments in the core area and in the urban fringe. This study choosed 5 alternative alignments proposed in the Mae Klong Line project. Each line represents an area with different level of development such as Line 1 and Line 2 represent lines passing developed area of Samut Sakhon city, while Line 3, Line 4 and Line 5 represent lines passing less developed area of the city. The study analysed the development trends of the area surrounding the rail transit stations by applying the Potential Surface Analysis (PSA) techniques composing of 5 components i.e. water area, government land and buildings, permanent buildings, temporary buildings, and vacant area. The research found that activities in the areas along the 5 alternative lines are crucial factors for the selection of appropriate alternatives. Since the three alternatives (Alternatives 3 - 5) were placed through the less developed area of the city, these three alternatives could produce the larger marginal development than alternatives 1 and 2 which run through the developed urban areas. Finally, it can be concluded that the rail routes, which are appropriate for Samut Sakhon, should be aligned through less developed area of the city. This alignment could guide the development of the city. The recommendation from the research are as follows; The planning of the mass transit system should considered the existing situation and use of land in the city; mass transit projects can guide the development along their routes; the existing development areas and vacant land should be considered as the factors in planning of the mass transit alignment; and identities and requirements of each urban function should be included in the planning process. |
