The main objective of the thesis is to study symbols representingthat present Chinese ethnic identity in Thai society through the study ofChinese shrines in Amphoe Muang Nakhon Pathom. In this study, it was foundthat Chinese shrine has important roles in maintaining Chinese identity byreviving Chinese language in Chinese shrine and conserving Chinese religionand Chinese religious activities throughout the year. Persistence ofChinese language school and vegetarian festival at the shrine under studyare concrete evidents of the role of the Chinese shrine in maintainingChinese identity. In addition, people who manage Chinese shrines andChinese language school are Chinese community leaders whose roles are toconserve and maintain Chinese identity. |
