This paper aims to study the causes, process and impact of migrationof the northeast peasants to Nakhonpathom municipality after the economiccrisis through an application of qualitative research. The study was basedon the number of 100 respondents by using the questionnaires that comprisedof 3 parts i.e. personal data such as age, gender, education, domicile,occupation causes of migration of the Northeast peasants to NakhonpathomMunicipality include lack of job opportunity in the Northeast occupation,draught and reason to migrate living style of the residents of NakhonpathomMunicipality. The study was conducted by asking open-ended questions to theselected 10 respondents as case studies. They represent a variety ofoccupations. Data collection was carried out from May 2000 to July 2000. The result indicated that causes of migration include economic andsocial factors For social factors, the problem ranged from broken home,debts arisen from gambling and divorce to the social value put on migratingfor job opportunities in big city. This social value has been developedbased on information provided through the social network of family members,relatives, friends and acquaintances. From an education perspective, themajority of migrants finished the primary education and are from poor andlarge families. Moreover, the respondents received support and assistancethroughout the whole process of migration from their social networks. Thestudy of migration process showed that most migrants had previous migrationexperience prior to migrating to Nakhonpathom Municipality such as movingto the town, district or neighboring areas. After migration toNakhonpathom, occupations adopted include collecting used items for sales,wage labor, selling ice-cream, riding tricycle, etc. Therefore, the impactof economic crisis on migration was that the migration pattern became morelongterm and more permanent. It also increased a number of homeless and newways of earning. |
