The purposes of this research were 1) to develop instructional systemfor general education course using Web-based Instruction 2) to compare theability of self-directed learning, critical thinking skills, ethics andlearning achievement of the students and 3) to analyze the cost oforganization management, the students' expenditure together with other costbenefits. The research model was implemented on a group of 60 first-yearstudents who registered a general education subject at Sripatum Universityin the second semester of the academic year 2000. Two groups of thestudents, 30 students on each experiment and control group were chosen bymatching procedure based on GPA, were used in the implementation. Using thetraditional method, the control group was taught 2 hours per week for 15weeks, a total of 30 hours. Each student in the experimental group wasrequired to have at least 1 login per 1 lesson plan including ascheduled-summary with the instructor. The data were then analyzed usingstatistical t-test. The research results were as follows: 1. The students in the experimental a group had average total scorein the self-directed learning and ethical dispositions higher than those ofthe control group but lower in critical thinking disposition and learningachievement. Based on the test on the different average, the averageability in all 4 categories were not significant. 2. Posttest scores of self-directed learning, critical thinking, ethical dispositions and learning achievement were significantly higherthan the pretest scores in the experimental group. (p < .05). 3. The Web-based Instruction system could enhance the students'learning which was not different from those of traditional instruction. It is found that most of the educational institutes expenditures arethe Internet system installation and computer laboratory, remote accessservices, lease lines, personnels, and WBI costs. Whereas of the student'scost, they are registration fee, microcomputer cost, internet servicecharges, transportation and living expenses. The findings from various experts indicate the necessary to utilizethe WBI for all of general education subjects. However, the approach shouldcoincide with the traditional ones which the student must occasionally meetwith the instructor. It is suggested that the WBI approach will widely beaccepted in a long run. Educational institutes must commit to provide planand support for their respective IT investment, and Web-based curriculumshould be standardized with the appropriate educational quality controls. |
