This thesis aims to study the Phya Wanon, monkey warriors'war dance patterns in the Khon performance. Three monkey warriorswho held very important roles in the war dance were Sukreep,Hanuman, and Ongkot. The basic sequence of training, theircharacteristics, and their stylistic fighting patterns werestudied and analysed to find out the process of training Khonmonkey and the fighting dance patterns of the three mainwarriors. This included the demons who were their counterparts. The findings of this research could be summed up as thefollowings the training of Khon monkeys should begin with thepreliminary steps and gestures so as to enable the learners todance correctly as monkey in the Khon performance and to beadhere to the standard patterns. As far as the war dance patterns were concerned, it wasfound that their dance gestures were similar, especially thechallenging, the preparation, and the four principal fightingpatterns. The difference may be found in the fourth fightingpattern which would be diversified according to the situation ofthe plot. The war dance gestures were systematically arrangedaccording to a typical pattern Pad, first engagement and Jab,second engagement and withdraw for recharging, and Khuen Loi,mounting on one's adversary. Most of these war dance gesturesemphasized the monkey lords' strength and agility. The Khon monkey warriors' war dance patterns consisted ofthe dance gestures which had to harmonize with those of the ogrelords. Therefore, orgres' war dances should be studied in orderto serve as an inter-related text. |
