This research aims at studying Klom, a classical dance set piece inKhon including its historical development, dance elements, and the NationalTheatre standard patterns of Klom dance for Orachun and Narai. Researchmethodology comprises related documentary review, interviewing ofexperienced Klom dancers and two experts in Thai classical dance__ UdomAnguthorn and Thongchai Pothayarom. Research finds that Klom dance set piece appeared in Khon and Lakonperformances since Ayudhya period. Klom dance depicts long and dignifyjourney, troupe reviewing of deities, and displaying virtuosity of dancer.This dance has been passing down to today in four major schools namely KromPra Pitaktewet, Krom Luang Tep Harirak which was developed into Lamun andTanpuying Paew schools. Khon Klom dance of these schools were historicallydeveloped from Lakon Nai style. Dance elements such as texts, costume andmusic are also based upon Lakon Nai. Klom dancer is normally the leadingmale Khon dancer. Klom dance pattern closely related to martial arts dance, male'stroupe reviewing dance and Lakon Nai dance style. Its pattern is nottotally fixed. Dancer can choose different sequences to make a Klom danceby considering 1) time limitation; 2) three parts structure__ beginning,specific dance gestures of particular character, and traveling dance; 3)not repeating dance gestures or directions, 4) drum patterns, 5) threefacing directions__ front and two side views, 6) Na Nang, a dance gesturefrom Nang Yai to express strength and dinity. This research can bean an example for other similar kind of studies. |
