This thesis aims at studying the dances created by The FineArts Department for the Khon performance at The National Theatreof the Department. The study focussed on the dance patterns ofthe four Khon characters-Phra-Nang (male-female), Yak (demon),Ling (monkey), and Sat (animal). The research found that dances in Khon were created duringthe time when Thai dance was under the responsibility of The FineArts Department. These dances gave extra-vagance to theperformance as well as amplifying the subject of the play. Therewere two ways to choreograph these dances-adaptation from theancient ones and creation the new ones. These dances were similarin their styles, sequence and patterns--introduction, body andconclusion. The body of the dances of the male and female, thedemon and the monkey had song lyrics to accompany the dance. Therest had only pure music accompaniment. There are five types offloor plan according to their repetition--V shape, double file, arow, a slant row and circular. Dance gestures of male-female,demon and monkey were based upon standard Khon dance patternsaccording to each character. And the animal dance gestures weretaken from the actual animal movements with the dance refinement. The costume for male-female, demon and monkey were of standardtypes, and the animal costumes and headdresses were theadaptation of the natural appearance the looked more natural andless refine than the others. Music for male-female were basedupon ancient dance suites, and for demon and monkey were basedupon dance set pieces. Music for animal especially dear andbuffalo were new compositions. Dance in Khon of The Fine Arts Department were created withrefinement and valueless for the sake of Thai dance culture. Theyare worth studying and well preserving for the future. |
